When we first began this project I did not know what to base my lair on or even what to make it look like. I played around with basic shapes and ideas for the layout and none were quite right. So I decided to look at myself and things that I like and I thought about how I really like dragonflies and the way they look. This gave me the idea of my superhero being ‘bug girl’ and I began sketching layout shapes that were based upon a dragonfly. I also researched other super heros to get ideas about what rooms I would create in my lair and I decided to make it a mixture of superhero type rooms and rooms that you would find in a normal house, like in the Fantastic Fours Baxter Building. I planned to make a bedroom, a laboratory, a meeting come living room and a teleporter room. I wanted a bedroom because I think that every super hero needs a bed, a laboratory so my bug girl can create new ways of defeating enemies, a meeting/living room so she can relax after a hard day fighting villains or meet with other super heros and a teleporter room so she can get from place to place much quicker than flying like superman or in a vehicle like batman. I also wanted my lair to be quite light and natural because my superhero is a bug, so I used materials that were light and pleasant looking rather than dark and gothic, I made the floor look like grass and the lair open topped so it was at ‘one with nature’. I put a lot of normal objects in my lair too such as sofa’s and a desk, but I did still make it look like a lair by having a map of the world in the meeting room and strange objects in the laboratory and of course the teleporter which is a huge round portal that ripples. I got the idea for the shape of the teleporter from Austin Powers, as in one film there is a huge portal that lets you travel through time and I liked the way it looked, but I did make my idea a lot different. I wanted to keep my lair quite normal and simple because super hero’s often struggle to get away from their super hero life so I wanted to create a lair that didn’t overwhelm you with super hero gadgets and objects but I still think it is a believable superhero lair. I think it could be seen as an unusual super hero lair because it doesn’t have all the obvious super hero things in it, but it does have classic parts in it for example the laboratory and teleporter. I think the genre is based upon nature because of its shape, the type of super hero who lives in it, and the materials I used. Also I added a soundtrack that was delicate sounding and nice to listen to. I think I made a lair that was different to others that reflects my personality and is also good for a bug girl to live in.
