One Shot

We started one shot last week and it seems like it will be good, although I didn't really get a good idea of what we would be doing, as we started the session by doing risk assessment. It is something you Have to do when using film equipment, but I don't think it was good to do it on the first day of learning about one shot as I don't feel very excited about continuing with it. Later on in the session we tried to write really short stories in our groups. I found it quite hard as my group had to write a horror story and I don't really watch horror films, but it was good as well because it meant we thought about things we had seen and used them in our own way in our story. In our next seminar we should be able to start learning about how to make our films so that will be good.

We looked at the opening sequence of a film called Touch of Evil (1958). It was based on the novel Badge of Evil by Whit Masterson and is a black-and-white film, written, directed and co-starring Orson Welles. It is considered one of the last examples of film noir.
The opening sequence is done in a single take with a large crane and tracks. I think this helps it all flow better and there are good angles that you might not usually achieve. The background music is good as well as it gives the film a tone, and changes when different things happen, for example after the bomb is put into the car the ticking noise fits in with the music.
